WEDDING TRENDS REPORT

2018 was a fun year of velvet, neon, millennial pink and…oh yes, wedding alpacas, but 2019 is looking a whole lot moodier! Here’s a little glimpse into what our Revelry couples and the wedding industry is going to see next year.

Colours and Textures

Pantone deemed 2018 the year of Ultra-Violet. Shades of purple and shocking hues of lilac came through in lighting, florals and even accessories. In 2019, we’re told that Pantone has crowned Living Coral as it’s colourful prom queen. A side-step from the various shades of modern pink that were all over this year’s moodboards, Pantone describes Living Coral as “an animated, life-affirming shade of orange, with golden undertones.”

We can see it working in small doses alongside florals (are coral peonies not the best thing ever?) - accent napkins, stationery, colourful coral cocktails. And we definitely have a few summer couples who are already planning to use this colour palette, so we’re excited to see how it works.

But on the whole we’re seeing the industry shift to darkier, moodier colours - shades and pairings in the red family like burgundy and sherry (yum). An admittedly Autumnal palette that seems to work all year and for all settings. It’s at the same time classic and elegant as it is moody and modern.

Contrast this with the continued prevalence of neon. We love neon for it’s flexibility - looks great when in a similarly contemporary wedding setting like a warehouse or a club, but equally fascinating and fabulous in a more traditional setting (like how we styled it for a shoot at 10-11 Carlton House Terrace, below) or even in the middle of the woods. A versatile and modern element we’re still seeing all over 2019.

Flowers

Pampas grass saw it’s true heyday in 2017/2018, the trend is fast moving towards the dried floral look more generally. Couples are discovering the beauty of a whole range of flowers that just look a little bit cooler if they are a little bit more…dry.

Puffs of baby’s breath sprayed a variety of colours to give it an upgrade, mixed with feathery grass and bunches of silvery lunaria - it’s a look we’re loving.

Dried lunaria (otherwise known as the Honesty plant, cute) has an incredible look that’s just a little bit glam. These beautiful shimmery silver discs work perfectly as a hair accessory or just as a touch of shimmer to a bouquet or centrepiece.

There’s also a shift away from tall, candelabra heavy table arrangements and instead low, over-flowing centrepieces are seeing a burst of popularity. Long and low flower-scapes rather than the ‘garland of greenery’ route we’ve seen in previous years, these are more like mini-gardens springing up from the table. When it comes to flower vessels, we’re seeing florists using more ceramics and raw materials, replacing the more traditional metals and glass.

Food

Oh yes, the main event. What’s new for wedding food in 2019?

Family-style dining has been a big trend for years when it comes to the main wedding meal, but now we’re looking at revolutionising the way both canapés and evening food is served. Introducing, the grazing table. By no means a new concept, but it’s having a revival and a makeover in 2019.

We’ve already got several couples working with companies like Grape & Fig to design incredibly artistic displays of food and local produce. They impress guests yes, but more importantly, keep them fed. It’s a show-stopping alternative to passed canapés or the standard buffet and we cannot wait to see them in real life.

Beyond that, the way people are consuming food is having a massive effect on weddings in 2019. With veganism on the rise, people being more aware of where food comes from and how it’s packaged, we’re seeing more couples opt for more eco-conscious and ethical menus. Even if you’re not a vegetarian yourself, offering a meat-free menu is both kinder on the environment, and your budget too, which is why it’s gaining popularity this coming year.

Bridal

Thanks, in part, to Meghan Markle’s evening outfit choice - halter wedding gowns are seeing a resurgence in 2019. A flattering neckline, showing off just the right amount of skin, with designers like Sebastien Luke bringing some incredible looks for next year’s brides.

Tailored, minimalist outfits have also been spotted on the bridal runways for the year ahead, bringing an androgynous breath of fresh air while being chic and looking pretty comfortable, we have to say.

Embellishments and florals are still all over the runway for 2019, including the bold ‘tattoo effect’ gown, which works with sheer fabrics and embellishments to create the illusion of a tattoo on skin. A versatile design that can be used in small elements, such as a back detail, or all over like this ballsy and fashion-forward jump suit by Pronovias (above). Very KKW!

Finally, the inclusion of colour into the bridal gown choice. We saw this year Mandy Moore’s own stunning baby pink gown by Rodarte, and we’re seeing more and more designers go for non-traditional colours for a show-stopping look.
